The Grand Rapids Region Writer's Group

We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, October 11, 2025

at the Byron Township Community Center at Whistlestop Park,

2120 76th St SW, Byron Center, MI 49315.

We are excited to announce that Michigan author Jane Kolven will present

“Authorship and AI: Writing and Publishing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”

Whether you’re AI-curious or AI-cautious, this workshop will empower you to recognize

the opportunities and pitfalls ofgenerative AI and navigate this new world with confidence.

In this digital age, artificial intelligence has become increasingly present.

It is what supplies the predictive text when we use many of the apps

on our devices. It’s what powers things like Siri, Alexa, and Google Home.

It drives the GPS systems in our cars and phones. It’s difficult to avoid.

The rise of generative AI is transforming the writing and publishing landscape,

but what does that mean for authors?

This workshop offers a practical and thought-provoking exploration

of AI’s role in the future of writing and publishing.

Michigan author Jane Kolven will guide us through what AI entails,

about its ethical use, and how we as authors can ethically use the tools available to us.

She will also lead a hands-on session,so you will want to bring your laptops or writing devices along!

Workshop Details:

  • We’ll begin with an accessible introduction to AI: what it is, how it works, how it compares to other technologies used by authors and publishers.

  • From there, we’ll unpack some of the ethical dilemmas and controversies surrounding generative AI, including algorithmic bias, copyright concerns, and misinformation.

  • You’ll get hands-on guidance on some AI writing tools, learning when they can support your creativity and when they might lead you astray.

  • Finally, we’ll examine how AI is reshaping publishing, with insights into shifting markets and evolving reader expectations.

Jane Kolven is the author of four LGBTQ romance novels and a member

of the Greater Detroit Romance Writers. Jane grew up writing stories before

taking a detour into theater, performance art, and film.

She is now happy to return to her first love, writing. In her other life,

she’s a college professor who researches AI and is currently writing

a book about AI’s impact on creative industries.
